Change Your Nutrition, Change Your Life
Medical nutrition therapy has a positive impact on improvement for diabetics and in managing serum lipids and weight control. A random clinical trial designed to evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional intervention found that 3 nutrition counseling sessions during a period of 6 months resulted in significant decreases in weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, FBG, LDL, and total cholesterol levels in the intervention group compared to controls. At 12 months most of the outcomes were maintained, including reduced intake of saturated fat and increased intake of fruits, vegetables, and fiber. Body composition, biochemical indicators and lifestyle assessments were the parameters measured. A review of randomized controlled trials of nutrition therapy in patients with diabetes showed reduction in hemoglobin A1c levels from the use of strategies addressing lifestyle changes and nutrition advice. The target parameters were metabolic abnormalities of glucose, lipids, and blood pressure. The authors recommend early referral for lifestyle changes and nutrition advice in order to yield the most benefit in prevention of the development of type 2 diabetes or minimization of progression of diagnosed disease. At Lamorinda Nutrition we use Bio-impedance body composition testing to help your patients change their nutrition habits. BIA is useful for both follow-up and patient motivation. By witnessing their efforts rewarded with healthy changes in body composition, patients can persist in maintaining themselves on a program and avoid the road to debilitating and expensive diseases. We are committed to helping them change to a healthy lifestyle for life.
