Establishing a Relationship with your Primary Care Physician

If you are over 65 (or fast approaching that number), it is important that you not wait until you are ill to select or get to know your primary care physician. Establishing a good relationship with your physician is beneficial to you as they are an important resource in the care of your health.

Since your primary care physician is the doctor you will go to on a regular basis or if you have a medical issue, it is a good idea to find one who you are comfortable with and that feels like a good fit for you. Family and general medicine practitioners are essentially responsible for your entire healthcare program.

If you have yet to choose a doctor, it is a good idea to talk to him or her before to see if they are right for you. You should also talk to friends or family who might have gone to your doctor of choice to find out if they were satisfied with the care they received. Have an idea of the type of doctor, personal style and bedside manner you are comfortable with and ask questions accordingly. And remember, you are your own best advocate.

Although you will have access to other physicians, your primary care physician will need to give you a referral; making them an indispensable part of your overall wellness program.

As primary care emphasizes wellness, health education, prevention, and early detection of diseases, creating a trusting relationship with your physician will give you a better understanding of your overall health and enhance the continuity of your care. Typically, a primary care physician is involved in caring for you for years. Therefore, it is very important that you are comfortable with your doctor and have established a good working relationship.

You and your primary care physician are a team – working together on behalf of your wellbeing. In establishing a trusting relationship, your doctor will get to know your habits, medical history, lifestyle, and your family. In turn, this information will help them provide care to a whole person, not just address a particular medical issue. Together, you and your doctor can develop a personal health plan to keep you in good health and assist in preventing illness.

Investing in your relationship with your primary care physician when you are healthy will benefit you when you are ill or in need medical services in a hurry. An open and trusting relationship will enhance your quality of care and give you (and your family and friends) peace of mind hopefully for many years to come.
